The Pro-Form 542s is pretty basic, especially when compared to its high-end brethren. Still, for about $600, you get quite a few features. When we tried the treadmills at Sears, the 542s felt comparable to treadmills costing $1,000-2,000. The Nordic Trac's were the priciest, except for one that was $800, but Consumer Reports gave it a poor rating.

Here's a shot of the interface:

It has a few quick speed controls, an incline control, pulse control, the usual stop and start buttons, and a built-in fan to help keep you cool. A magnetic key in the center clips to your waist in case the treadmill sends you seaworthy. It's also the main way to turn the treadmill on. You can also download iFIT running programs and mp3's and use them through the available stereo jacks.

The display is bright with big, easy-to-read digits and a luminous blue background. Though you can't input your weight and age, the treadmill gives a rough estimate of calories and carbs burned. There's also a simple graphic of a track that lights up as you progress in distance, enabling you to say "I think I'll run 4 laps today".

The running platform is supported by Pro-Form's Pro Shox suspension system:

The support provided by the suspension is not too soft, so the run is still fairly firm, which I like. I don't remember the name, but another we tried when looking around was too bouncy, almost trampoline-like.

Acoustically, the treamdill is fairly quiet, save for the sound of the belt running around the rollers.

The ProForm 542 is a great entry-level treadmill for those who just want something sturdy to exercise on.

Some others to consider:
ProForm 530i Treadmill
Horizon T51 FeatherLIGHT Treadmill
Treadmills and Accessories
Pro Form CrossWalk Advanced 525s
Pro Form 590s Treadmill

update We've now logged about 50 miles on the treadmill. It's holding up well and has no major problems.

update 28 Apr 05 - logged many, many more miles and it's still working excellent.
